Intrinsically Safe Ethernet gives access to Zone 1 and Zone 0 hazardous areas

Mon 21 Apr 2008

MTL Instruments, a part of Cooper Crouse-Hinds, is pleased to announce the release for sale of the 9400 Series Intrinsically Safe (IS) Ethernet range and the launch of an enhanced Power supply, 9491-IS, which incorporates MTL’s patented Fast Switch technology. The 9400 IS Ethernet range of hardware devices that can deliver Intrinsically Safe (IS) Ethernet into Zone 1 and Zone 0 hazardous areas. The deployment of Ethernet into Process Automation has long been hindered by the hazardous area classification in which the end device is often installed. Consequently the majority of Industrial Ethernet installations have been in the Factory Automation environment. Additionally, in Process Automation it is preferred to use a single cable providing power and communications to the end device. The 9400 Series delivers Intrinsically Safe “Power over Ethernet” (PoExTM), allowing live connection and disconnection of the end device in Zone 0 and Zone 1 hazardous areas typically reducing the cost of installing the LAN in hazardous areas by 40%.

MTL launches Tofino™ Industrial Security Solution following successful beta testing

Mon 01 Oct 2007

MTL and Byres Security Inc. are pleased to announce the Tofino™ Industrial Security Solution has successfully completed Beta testing and is available for purchase. The Tofino™ Industrial Security Solution offers SCADA and process control companies a layered security solution for their industrial systems by deploying low-cost security appliances directly in front of each control device (or group devices) that needs protection. These appliances provide protection directly in front of the critical edge device. This allows a “defence-in-depth” strategy to be used, so even if a hacker or virus manages to get through the main corporate firewall, they will still be faced with an array of SCADA-focused security devices that need to be breached before any damage can be done to the control system itself.

MTL launches ‘second generation’ Fieldbus Barrier with improved performance

Mon 01 Jan 2007

MTL have released a ‘second generation’ design of their Fieldbus Barrier wiring hub. The 9311-FB is a field-mounted unit that provides intrinsically safe spur connections from a non-intrinsically safe trunk, for connection to Foundation fieldbus™ H1 or Profibus-PA field devices. When installed in a suitable enclosure, the 9311-FB can be installed in Zone 1 (gas) or Zone 2 (dust) hazardous areas, with the trunk wiring implemented using suitably protected cable and increased safety (Ex e) connection facilities. Each unit supports four intrinsically safe spurs which may be connected to FISCO or ‘Entity’ certified fieldbus devices in a Zone 1 or Zone 0 hazardous area. The spurs are short-circuit protected and each unit includes an optional fieldbus terminator by means of a linking plug.

NEW 8-SEGMENT FIELDBUS POWER SYSTEM OFFERS FREE REDUNDANCY!

Thu 02 Feb 2006

MTL-Relcom has launched what is seen as the “next generation” in fieldbus power systems, the F800 series. Designed for large-scale installations, the F800 series represents the ‘state-of-the-art’ in high-density, redundant fieldbus power supplies. Designed to achieve low per-segment cost and high packing density in large fieldbus installations, the F800 series uses 8-channel power supply modules in a redundant format on a passive base – the ‘Naked Carrier’ concept. With up to 50% space saving over existing fieldbus power supplies, the highest levels of system availability are achieved by eliminating all single points of failure. Savings in hardware overhead means that the F800 can provide redundant fieldbus power for the same cost as previous generation ‘simplex’ systems – so redundancy comes for free.
